MSG, or monosodium glutamate, is a flavour-enhancing food additive that intensifies other tastes in particular the salty and sour ones used in Asian cooking and also commonly found in fast foods as well as commercially packaged food products. MSG also includes glutamic acid (aka glutamate), an amino acid that is found naturally in foods like soybeans, mushrooms, and tomatoes.
The food and drug administration (FDA) has classified it as a food ingredient that is “generally recognized as safe” but it remains controversial with several reports of adverse reactions to food containing MSG.
